LA County School Cafeteria Records: Permits and Certificates

A Los Angeles County school cafeteria can be permitted and inspected without receiving a restaurant letter grade. For covered public-school districts, the county’s School Food Safety Inspection Program uses a district service agreement, site inspections and certificates. So a blank grade field leaves open whether a particular campus was inspected, covered by that agreement or operating under a different school-food arrangement.

Which LA County school cafeterias get two inspections a year

The county’s School Cafeterias page says public and private school cafeterias need a Public Health Permit, while inspections in its school-cafeteria program are ungraded. For public-school districts covered by its service agreement and the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs, the page describes two inspections per school per school year and a certificate. That defined coverage includes meal-preparation and service-only sites; the two-visit count applies only to schools covered by that agreement. A kitchen that prepares meals and a campus that only serves them may produce different records even when a district uses one menu or vendor.

Begin with the campus name, street address, district and the period you want to check. Ask whether the address identifies a preparation kitchen, a service-only cafeteria, or another food-service site. If meals arrive from a central kitchen, the receiving cafeteria and the central kitchen each have their own inspection record, so identify each site before comparing them. For a particular campus, you still need its own certificate or dated report alongside the district agreement.

What a missing letter grade means for an LA County school

The county’s school page says these inspections are ungraded. A missing grade reflects that program rule, separate from any score or result. A preparation site, a service-only site and a conventional restaurant may all serve food, but their public records should be interpreted under their actual programs. The site’s LA inspection, closure and citation guide explains the general restaurant activity lists; a school’s certificate or district agreement sits in a separate record class. If the school has no result in a restaurant lookup, confirm the school-food record class and custodian before drawing a conclusion.

For a dated school report, note the inspection date, site identity and whether a later visit addresses a specific earlier observation. The site’s inspection-report reading guide explains how to keep the original finding and later correction evidence in order.

Ask for the site records you actually need

The county’s School Cafeterias page directs questions about district agreements and certificates to Program Planning and Development; it also identifies the Camps and Schools program for school-food questions. Ask which office maintains the certificate and inspection file for the campus and dates you have identified. State whether you need the Public Health Permit, a dated inspection and follow-up, the site certificate, or confirmation of the relevant district agreement. The office can clarify the proper record class without guessing from a restaurant portal result.

For copies of official inspection or reinspection reports and Public Health Permits that are not shown online, the county’s inspection-results and records page gives an Environmental Health records-request route. It routes broader records, including applications and an all-records request, to the Department of Public Health custodian. If the district agreement or certificate is held elsewhere, ask the county to identify the actual custodian. A useful request includes the campus name and address, district, record types and a bounded date range. Ask about availability and any disclosure limits when you make the request.

The county school-cafeteria guidance also flags Long Beach, Pasadena and Vernon as separate jurisdictions. For a school in one of those cities, check that city’s health department first. LA County Public Health pages checked October 5, 2026.
